A Course in Miracles is an educational course for retraining the mind that is spiritual, rather than religious, in its perspective. Although it uses Christian terminology, it expresses a universal experience, and its ontology is reminiscent of ancient refrains, echoing the world's most ancient and hallowed traditions. The Course is pragmatic in its method, and its aim is peace: "Knowledge is not the motivation for learning this course. PEACE is."
The Course is the result of a collaboration that some describe as a "holy relationship" between two Columbia University psychologists, Dr. William T. Thetford and his colleague, Dr. Helen Schucman. In 1965, Helen experienced what she described as a Voice which spoke clearly in her mind, saying "This is a course in miracles. Please take notes." With Thetford's support and assistance in transcribing her shorthand notes and later editing the completed transcription, Schucman took down over a period of seven years some 1,500 typewritten pages which became A Course in Miracles. Completed in 1972, the Course consists of three main parts: the Text, the Workbook for Students and the Manual for Teachers. A brief additional section titled Clarification of Terms was added when the Course was first published in book form in 1975. More information.
